Let Us Shine Trophy 2010
Rotarians from Bothwell & Uddingston, East Kilbride,
Eastwood and Strathaven Clubs enjoyed the table
top curling competition and fellowship, not to mention
the pie and pint, in the second competition for the
Let Us Shine Trophy held at the Stewartfield Farm.
Keen competition in the two leagues produced close
final results. On Table 1 the "Kilbride Killers"
(Jim Moretti & George McGraw) were level on points
with the composite "Strathbride" pair (Jack Blackwood
& Ian Gilmour) but won on shots difference. Some
what surprisingly "Blind Drunk" (Alan Rae & John
McCafferty) were clear winners on Table 2, with the "Bothwell Battlers" (Robert Rollo & David Clarkson) narrowly defeating "Little & Large" (Barclay Wales & "IPP" Frank) on shots difference for the runner up position.
In the semi finals the "Kilbride Killers" overwhelmed the "Bothwell Battlers" and a fading "Blind Drunk" pair succumbed to "Strathbride". The final proved to be a much closer affair and at the final whistle in the five end final the scores were level at 6-6, but the "Strathbride" pairing secured the trophy with two shots in the first extra end.
In the unfortunate absence of Let Us Shine founder, Fiona Marra, East Kilbride President Elect, Roddy Shanks, stepped in to present Jack and Ian with the Let Us Shine Trophy for 2010.
Roddy also presented the winner of the Wie competition, Steve Malloy, with his prize. Topically, the format of this competition was a tennis tournament, but for the final this was unexpectedly changed to boxing, where Steve won with a thunderous punch which flattened his heavier opponent, David Brown.
The evening was concluded with a vote of thanks to the organiser, George McGraw and his wife, Frances, who was the scorer for the evening. In reply George thanked everybody for attending, the prize donors for their support, and John Cardno for organising the innovative Wie competition. The evening would provide funds to help the work of Let Us Shine, which was continuing to develop its school in Ghana.
